Award ceremony introduction as made by Bill Bryant of United Nations Association of OKC:
This winner of the Human Rights Award is a collective rather than an individual. CommonWealth Urban Farms is a dedicated group of people who are growing food and flowers on urbanized land in Oklahoma City.
Through their work, CommonWealth Urban Farms promotes equitable access to healthy food by equipping people throughout the City to transform their neighborhoods and grow their own food. Through their day to day actions, CommonWealth is an organization that values cooperation with and care for people of all different backgrounds and experiences. In their efforts to transform empty lots into vibrant spaces to grow food, they are educating Oklahoma on what it means to care for the Earth and in turn, for all creatures that rely on it.
Article 28 of the Universal Declaration tells us that, “Everyone is entitled to a social and international order in which the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration can be fully realized.”
One of the ways in which we secure these rights is to make sure that we have a society that is sustainable for generations to come. The good folks at CommonWealth Urban Farms are helping to assure that each of us is able to enjoy our human rights, and we thank them for their efforts.
Congratulations, CommonWealth Urban Farms!
