Peter Schaffer
Biographical Info
Attorney Peter K. Schaffer opened Kaiser’s Grateful Bean Café, 1039 N. Walker, Oklahoma City, OK 73102 in 1993. He opened the non-profit restaurant whose mission is to hire people down on their luck—the person out of the penitentiary, the single mom whose husband had abandoned her, the people out of drug rehab and people in need of a second chance in life. The people that he hires to work in his restaurant are from half-way houses, Dale Rodgers Training Center, the Department of Corrections and court-related or mental-health organizations.
The café continues to hire people in need of a hand-up not a hand-out. As an example, last Thanksgiving, he opened his restaurant up to the homeless people, gave them a typical Thanksgiving Dinner with all the trimmings and had volunteers waiting on each table to bring them their food and drinks. Pete’s selfless work on behalf of the less-fortunate among us for so many years certainly qualifies him for the Oklahoma Universal Human Rights Award.
